One Year Since We Dreamed YoRI at the IGC 2024

25 Aug 2025

Exactly one year ago today, we stood at the International Geological Congress (IGC 2024) in Busan, South Korea, with a dream: to amplify the voices of young professionals who not only study the Earth—but care deeply about its future.

In the face of accelerating environmental challenges, we knew it was vital to build a platform where young geoscientists could speak from their regions, in their own words. What began as a small, heartfelt project led by just two people—the IUGS Young Reporters—has since grown into something much bigger.

Today, that dream has become YoRI (the Young Reporters Initiative) a fully funded, officially recognized initiative of the International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS). With a global team of regional representatives and a strong governance framework, YoRI is now a thriving network supporting youth-driven geoscience communication, especially in underserved regions.

Events like the IGC 2024 remind us of the power of international dialogue to spark long-lasting change.

And beyond the science and strategy, gatherings like these also allow us to discover the beauty of new places. The vibrant city of Busan, with its stunning nightscapes and coastal charm, gave us not just inspiration—but unforgettable memories. (📸 Stay tuned for a few of our favorite moments!)

As we look ahead, YoRI remains committed to creating more of these spaces for collaboration and dialogue. Our mission is clear: to empower the next generation of scientists to engage the world with stories rooted in Geosciences.

YoRI's vice-chair.

From february 19 to 25 we were at the 79th Executive Council Meeting and the Geoscience for

Africa (or Geoscience in Africa) event in Nairobi, Kenya.

We presented a poster and disseminated our project with leaders in Geosciences from Uganda, Nigeria, Ethiopia, Botswana, Senegal, Mozambique, Namibia, Kenya, Angola, Ghana, and South Africa. We were honored to attend interesting talks about a wide range of topics, from the challenges of Geoscience research in Africa to the geothermal development in Kenya.

We are glad to be able to give voice to the Global South through our project and hope that many African geoscientists will join our team!
